2010
July 21 Carl Stimson Translating Oriental Medicine into English
The ancient therapies of acupuncture and Oriental herbalism have only been practiced widely in the West for around 40 years. However, the past 20 years have seen rapid development in the field, with government licensing of acupuncturists, health insurance coverage and an increased interest in research on the topic. As the vast majority of the literature is in Chinese, Japanese or Korean, translation of modern and ancient source texts has been an important part of the field's growth.
Although terminology for nearly all medical disciplines originated in the West, Oriental medicine is the opposite, causing many challenges for translators.
Carl Stimson is a licensed acupuncturist in the USA and has been involved in translation since 2007.
